《朔·溯·塑》Teaser Trailer

舞韵风情IV之《朔·溯·塑》讲述的是一个你我的故事,一个跨越时代的舞蹈史诗。此台节目分为三章,借用舞蹈来表现南下华侨的经历与体验。

Rhythm of Life IV aims to preserve and promote local Chinese culture and heritage by bringing audiences on a journey through space and time. Transcending three generations and seen through the eyes of the modern generation, this production captures the lives, values and trends of our forefathers by its unique presentation of classical Chinese dance, contemporary and modern styles with distinct Chinese flavour.

Background Information

  • This is the teaser trailer that I have created for NUS Chinese Dance’s upcoming performance.
  • This is also me practicing to edit with the 9:11 video aspect ratio in preparation for the video that might be used during the performance itself.
  • Forgot to interlace some of the video when I was extracting them out from their DVD source. Therefore some footage will look weird with horizontal lines running across some of the scenes with faster movements.
  • Using Happy Valley (shorter edit) again after I have used it once for NUS Chinese Dance promotional video. The song is the only soundtrack I have that has both strong “Oriental” and “Modern” feel to it. Time for me to expand my collection in this area.
  • The footage from 1:04 that feature scenes from 《妈姐情缘》are heavily edited because the original sequence contains various shots of Zoe Tay. I believe that her face is too recognizable in Singapore and she’d distract the audience from the main story that we are trying to propose.
  • 1:59 features the actress actually suffering from labor pain, causing her to fall suddenly. But by removing the original sounds from the video and matching it carefully with the music of the trailer, everything seems so smooth. Haha…
  • I realize it’s difficult to find footage of a more developed Singapore.
  • I had to reuse footage from NUS Chinese Dance promotional video. Oops…

the two things that disturb me the most is not knowing how to pronounce the performance title (major problem.. imagine: hey do u want to go to the chinese dance perf called *silence*) and secondly is the horizontal lines which well done you have already clarified. :)

i like the ending run of dance shots, maybe cos i get to see fen instead of the SBC ma jies. maybe cos i’m jia kantang, so i don’t really like the idea that ma jie is a 你我的故事. :D will u guys be doing ma jie dance..??? cos it was a signifcant length of the teaser trailer.

and to merllie’s comment… does something by SBC = well done? :p

    merllie: thanks for the compliments~!

yixin: good that you mentioned the part on how to pronounce the performance title. probably we’d need to come up with a catchy English equivalent title so that audience may refer to it easily too? and “你我的故事” is meant to be read in the broader sense; you are no 妈姐 of course. lastly, if nothing goes terribly wrong, the trailer ties in tightly with the performance. so it’s WYSISYG!

Singapore Dance Theatre has “Reminiscing the Moon”- balinese dance perf..
So perharps we can have “Reminiscing the Water”, as our ancestor was taking boat and reach NanYang… hehehe.. copycat.

but personally, i dont really like the chinese title.. doesnt sound nice when pronounce them… su4 su4 su4… susu= milk in malay…hahahah… but it looks “impressed” from the 3 different writtings…

agree with jingz on the first part of the video. happy valley is somehow is too consistently upbeat to convey the varying emotions/mood of the upcoming show. wish there was slower and softer parts to the music.

Nevertheless i muz say it is well done on the overall…the vibrancy of it muz have impressed the CFA panel loads. jiayou jiayou. keep it up. :D

HL: Actually it’s “Shuo·Shu·Shu”, and I believe most passerby will stumble on the first word like myself. Visually it’s nice, but unfortunately it doesn’t sound nice.

*~j|ngz~*: Yeah… This was completed in London, though I did prepare some footage in Singapore I thought was essential and brought it to London with me. Synchronizing the music with the footage was done to the best I can… The idea I had in mind was to create an edit that gives a sense similar to a movie trailer. So I had to keep to a single soundtrack that I use throughout the trailer. As for the logo, it couldn’t be removed with the software I have with me…

Sp@rrow: It’s a decision to maintain the music upbeat because with the only 4 minutes this trailer has with the judges, I have to come up with something that will leave a deep impression in their mind. My hope is at least they remembered that NUSCD created an impressive(?) video that tied in closely with their presentation. *Fingers crossed*

yixin: Forgot to mention that I am surprised(?) that you’d notice the horizontal lines~! Heh~

for the purpose of panel judging…i think the video/music has served extremely well. high energy is definitely the way to go. :D helps to debunk chinese dance as subdued.
however if you are intending to expand its use as a teaser for the upcoming show then i feel it may not be “teasing”, “curious inducing” or “dramatic” enough, depending on what is the objective set out to be achieved by the teaser. Assume keeping the image edit status quo, Happy Valley alone may be less adequate in conveying the multitude of emotions which the show would like to invoke and resonate with the audience. perhaps a remix of Happy Valley with another track might be interesting eg. kid koala’s ‘Emperor’s Main Course’ minus the english DJ track? juz a food for thot tho….

Youtube wasn’t chosen because I didn’t have much control over the quality of the video. To download the video, click here.
